WNCT-TV, ch. 9, is the CBS affiliate in Greenville, North Carolina, serving New Bern, Washington & the rest of east central North Carolina. The station broadcasts it's analog signal on VHF ch. 9 & it's DT signal on VHF ch. 10. It's transmitter is located in Grifton, North Carolina. WNCT is available on satellite through DirecTV & Dish Network.
WNCT signed on the air on December 22, 1953. It's the 4th-oldest continuous TV station in North Carolina (behind Charlotte's WBTV, Greensboro's WFMY-TV & Winston-Salem's WXII-TV) & the oldest station in the eastern part of the state. It was a part-time ABC affiliate until WNBE-TV (now WCTI-TV) signed on from New Bern in 1963. It was co-owned by Roy H. Park along with the The Daily Reflector & WNCT radio (AM 1070 & FM 107.9). WNCT remained the flagship station of Park Communications until Park merged with Media General in 1997.
After WJKA-TV (now WSFX-TV) in Wilmington dropped CBS in 1994, CBS programming was seen in the Wilmington area on WNCT, WRAL-TV & WBTW-TV until low-powered WILM-LD in Wilmington affiliated with CBS in 2000. WNCT and those other stations still serve some parts of the Wilmington market that don't get WILM-LD's signal over the air or on cable.
In September of 2006, WNCT's DT2 DT subchannel began serving as the area's affiliate for The CW. The CW subchannel is known as "Eastern North Carolina's CW". WNCT DT2 offers The Daily Buzz newscast weekday mornings from 6-9 AM. WNCT started a 10 PM newscast on WNCT DT2 on January 1, 2008.
WNCT The CW is available on DirecTV & Dish Network satellite services.
WNCT's newscasts are branded under the Eyewitness News label. The station's radar is called "Live VIPIR 9".
As of July 2008, WNCT is the ratings leader in the Greenville/New Bern/Washington TV market, taking first place @ 6 & 11 PM. Generally WNCT & WITN (the market's NBC affiliate) trade the ratings crown frequently.
