WGGB-DT2 is the primary FOX & secondary MyNetworkTV-affiliated TV station for the Pioneer Valley area of Massachusetts. The station is a 2nd DT subchannel of ABC affiliate WGGB-TV that is owned by Gormally Broadcasting, LLC. Over-the-air, WGGB-DT2 broadcasts a DT signal on UHF ch. 55.2 from WGGB's transmitter that is located on Mount Tom in Holyoke. Via cable, it's offered on Comcast ch. 6 & Charter ch. 10. There is a HDTV signal of WGGB-DT2 on Comcast digital cable ch. 861. WGGB-DT2's parent station has studios on Liberty Street in Springfield.
Syndicated programming on the station includes: The Simpsons, Family Guy, Scrubs & Everybody Loves Raymond. Based on it's channel location on Comcast, it's known on-air as FOX 6 Springfield. However, due to SynDex rules, WTIC-TV in Hartford, Connecticut, which had been the default FOX affiliate, is no longer available on local cable systems & some fans of shows like Seinfeld have complained about it.
Before launch of WGGB-DT2, the Springfield / Holyoke TV market was the largest DMA to not have a FOX affiliate of it's own. As mentioned, WTIC was the cable affiliate.
On November 16, 2007 the Springfield Republican reported that WGGB would be launching a FOX affiliate on it's 2nd DT subchannel. It was expected to begin broadcasting by the end of the year but was delayed until March 31, 2008. When it launched, WGGB-DT2 took WTIC's cable channel location on Comcast systems, the latter moved to the digital tier on ch. 292. It's not known if COX cable viewers will have access to WGGB-DT2.
At one point, WGGB's 2nd DT channel had been broadcasting The Tube, a 24-hour DT music channel. It was dropped @ the end of 2006. When the station relaunched, it also started to show MyNetworkTV programming as a secondary affiliate. That network's shows are seen on weeknights from 11:30 PM-1:30 AM & on early Sunday mornings from 12:30 AM-2:30 AM. It was announced that with the startup of WGGB-DT2, a new weeknight 10 PM newscast would be added to the lineup (it launched on September 8, 2008). Back on August 18, CBS affiliate WSHM-LP launched the market's 1st 10 PM newscast on it's weather channel. That production airs 7 nights a week. The layout for WGGB-DT2's website is the same as FOX stations that are O&O by the network.
