National SportsChannel (or NSC for short) was a 24-hour Sports NewsChannel. It was created by WMFL Corporation, bringing together it's NNC & it's NNC Sports Department. It was launched with much fanfare on July 16th, 1995.
NSC aimed to provide the most comprehensive sports news service on TV, including news from around the country & around the world.
What led to NSC's demise was that it had the misfortune of being born about the same time as all-sports news rivals SCNews & SportsChannel's SportsCenter. NSC reached about only 20 million homes, not enough to receive a rating by Nielsen Media Research, which was a killer with sponsors. SCNews benefited from the leverage SportsChannel (86.5 million homes) has with cable operators. In contrast, news channel parent NNC didn't have the same clout with cable operators for it's all-sports news channel.
In it's dying days, NSC added some NASCAR qualifying, Wimbledon matches & televised the now-defunct Women's United Soccer Association & National Lacrosse League.
NSC closed it's doors on July 17th, 2002. On many cable systems, NSC was replaced by SportsChannel which was launched on June 1st, 1980
