KBJR operates the area's MyNetworkTV affiliate on it's 2nd DT subchannel & Charter cable ch. 9. The station is known on-air as "My 9". The "My 9" moniker is based on the channel's location on Charter cable systems, a legacy of the system's previous coverage of former Minneapolis - St. Paul independent station (& later UPN affiliate) KMSP-TV on that number.

History Edit

Originally, KBJR DT2 was a UPN affiliate, known as "Northland UPN". The station was also available in the Ashland, Wisconsin area on WAST-LP ch. 25, which was an over-the-air, LP semi-satellite of the DT subchannel. WAST-LP was owned by a separate entity from KBJR.

On January 24 2006, the UPN & WB networks announced that they would cease broadcasting & merge to create a new broadcast TV network. The new network would be called The CW, the letters representing the 1st initial of it's corporate parents CBS (the parent company of UPN) & the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner. On February 22 2006, News Corporation announced that they would start up another new broadcast TV network called MyNetworkTV. The new network, which is sister to FOX, is operated by FOX TV Stations & it's syndication division 20th Television. MyNetworkTV was created to give UPN & WB stations, not mentioned as becoming CW affiliates, another option besides becoming independent.

It was announced that "Northland UPN" would become an independent station known as "Northland 9" with a new logo & graphics for the station. In March of 2006 it was announced that "Northland 9" would become the market's affiliate of MyNetworkTV. In July, ahead of the launch of MyNetworkTV, "Northland 9" became known as "My 9". WAST ended it's broadcasting in August. MyNetworkTV began broadcasting on September 5, 2006.
