CNY News 7 is a 24-hour local news channel headquartered in Syracuse, New York. The channel, which is O&O by WMFL Corporation, is a member of WMFL's 24-hour local cable news networks across the country & is also the hub for weather operations across the New York state. CNY News 7 is available to cable subscribers throughout Central New York, New York's Southern Tier & the "North Country" including the western/northern Adirondack Region. It began operations in November of 2003.
WMFL Corporation invested a large amount of capital to launch the channel, including a $6-million restoration of Syracuse's former New York Central Rail Station. In addition to that headquarters facility, CNY News 7 also bases reporters & photographers in 5 regional newsrooms located throughout it's Central/Northern New York coverage area.
In February of 2007, CNY News 7 added a separate channel with news, weather & sports targeting the Binghamton & Elmira/Corning markets, with 5 reporters & a technician operating from new bureaus located in Vestal & Corning. This expansion also added 4 additional producers @ the Syracuse headquarters who work exclusively on the Southern Tier program feed, which is called "CNY News 7 Southern Tier".
On May 25th 2005, just 18 months after debuting, WMFL Corporation announced that 30 staff positions would be eliminated in a cost-saving consolidation of it's 4 Upstate NY news operations. All of CNY News 7's technical production & master control operations were merged with Capital Region News 6, it's sister channel in Albany. Capital Region News 6 NOW serves as the news anchoring & production hub, while CNY News 7's 8 meteorologists produce weather forecasts for it's sister operations statewide. The channels retained all their local news gathering crews, producers, facilities & local news management.
CNY News 7, CNY News 7 Southern Tier, Capital Region News 6 (Albany), News 12 Rochester & WNY News 9 also share news content with NYNC, the flagship-NY state WMFL Corporation local cable news channel in New York City (which cable providers offers to digital cable subscribers in the Upstate markets).
The 2 separate CNY News 7 & CNY News 7 Southern Tier channels are available to about 900,000 or more cable subscribers in all or parts of 25 New York counties, along with portions of Pennsylvania's Northern Tier. This makes the combined operation 1 of the larger local/regional news channels nationwide, both in terms of subscribers & geographic coverage area. The channel's website won a coveted Edward R. Murrow national "Best Website" award in 2004. The channel is also the recipient of 5 regional Murrows & several NY State AP & Syracuse Press Club awards.
During the April of 2009 American Civic Association Binghamton shootings, CNY News 7's LIVE coverage was picked up by NNC. A letter from the shooter was mailed to the Syracuse newsroom the day of the shootings & was received & reported on by the channel, 3 days later
